That night under the cover of dark Godspeed snuck out of his grandmother’s house to the Roof Nightclub. There he saw earless Pipecock Jackxon spinning at the turntables. Dub magnified his depression and his dread. The next day at school sunlight fused to the leaves of the cherry tree threw a stained-glass window at his feet. He kicked against the pricks of the shadows and they shattered.

“Boy!” “Yes sir.” “Who broke down the walls of JERICHO?” “It was not me sir.” “Stretch out your hand give me!” Even before the cat-o’-nine-tails grazed his flesh the boy started to bawl poppy-water.
